Tata stocks crash after Chandrasekaran exit shock: TCS falls nearly 5%

Mumbai/IBNS: The share prices of Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) on Wednesday crashed over 4% after N Chandrasekaran's shock resignation as the Tata Sons chairman, media reports said.

TCS shares fall 4.84%

TCS stocks crashed 4.84% to Rs. 2,322 per piece after Chandrasekaran announced he won't seek reappointment after February 2027.

The announcement triggered a negative reaction in the stock market, with investors closely watching the leadership transition at the Tata Group's holding company.

Tata Power, Tata Steel also decline

Shares of other major Tata Group companies also came under pressure following the announcement.

Tata Power and Tata Steel declined by more than 1% during Wednesday's trading session.

The market reaction comes amid uncertainty over the future leadership of Tata Sons, as Chandrasekaran's current term is set to end in February 2027.

Chandrasekaran says he will not seek reappointment

In a statement, Chandrasekaran said he had completed 40 years of professional life at the Tata Group and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the organisation.

“Leading Tata Sons over the past decade has been a great honour and a profound responsibility,” he said.

His current tenure as chairman of Tata Sons is scheduled to end on February 20, 2027.

Five-year extension proposal deferred

Chandrasekaran said the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended extending his next term by five years.

The proposal was subsequently recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board.

However, when the resolution was tabled before the Tata Sons Board on February 24, 2026, it was not carried through as one Board member did not support it.

“In the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision,” Chandrasekaran said.

Tata Sons yet to resolve leadership issue

Chandrasekaran further said that six months after the Board meeting, Tata Sons has still not reached a resolution on its leadership issue.

He stressed the importance of appointing a leader who can take charge of the Group beyond February 2027, particularly as several strategic projects are currently at critical stages of execution.

He also said clarity on the Group's future leadership is important for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders.
