Tata Steel’s Haldia unit becomes first non-recovery coke plant in India to cross 25 MT milestone
Kolkata: Tata Steel’s Hooghly Met Coke (HMC) Division in Haldia has set a new benchmark in India’s metallurgical coke industry, becoming the country’s first non-recovery coke-making unit to produce 25 million tonnes of coke in a single campaign life — without any major repair or overhaul, according to a press release on Friday.
The record, achieved on June 29, 2025, underscores Tata Steel’s operational excellence and engineering resilience.
Commissioned over 17 years ago, HMC is Asia’s largest standalone coke facility with a production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes per annum.
Unlike conventional units, it operates without a by-product recovery system, instead using 100% of the flue gas generated to produce 120 MW of power, contributing to the company’s sustainability goals, the press release said.
“As the first non-recovery coke-making unit in India to cross 25 million tonnes, HMC’s uninterrupted operations for nearly two decades is a testament to Tata Steel's ability to maximise asset life and manage processes with unmatched efficiency,” said Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President - Operations, Tata Steel Jamshedpur.
The unit has continued to operate reliably despite being exposed to harsh weather, including monsoons, cyclones, and saline coastal conditions. Its success is credited to a combination of indigenous innovation, rigorous process optimisation, and consistent quality output, ensuring a steady supply of metallurgical coke to Tata Steel’s blast furnaces, said the release.
This milestone not only reinforces Tata Steel’s leadership in the non-recovery heat recovery (NRHR) coke-making space but also reflects its long-term focus on sustainability, technological advancement, and efficient resource management in iron-making.
