Chennai: Tamil Nadu is a key recipient under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, securing a chunk of projects in the electronics and automobile sectors, said Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, according to a PTI report.

Addressing an event hosted by the Chennai Citizens' Forum on Saturday, Sitharaman highlighted that Tamil Nadu was home to one of India's two major electronics parts manufacturing clusters, alongside Gujarat.

Sitharaman also pointed out that attempts were being made to hide these developments in Tamil Nadu by diverting people’s attention with issues like the three-language policy and delimitation.

The state has received an allocation of ₹1,100 crore for the development of this cluster, she said.

Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw recently visited Zetwerk’s facility near Chennai and announced the establishment of two electronics manufacturing clusters worth ₹1,112 crore near Chennai.

PLI boost for Tamil Nadu’s automobile sector

Tamil Nadu ranks as the second-largest recipient under the PLI scheme for the automobile and auto component sector.

Of the 82 applications approved under the scheme, 46 are based in Tamil Nadu.

Four firms from the state have secured approval under the PLI scheme for advanced chemistry cell battery manufacturing.

Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen initiatives

The Centre has sanctioned ₹7,453 crore under the Viability Gap Funding Scheme to develop offshore wind energy projects in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

The country’s first Green Hydrogen Hub Port has been planned for Tuticorin, Sitharaman revealed.

Major infrastructure developments in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has seen the addition of 1,303 km of new railway lines, with 2,242 km of the network electrified, reducing reliance on coal and diesel.

As part of the Chennai Metro expansion, 54 km is now operational, while the Phase 2 expansion—costing ₹63,046 crore—has received approval, with 60% of funding coming from the Union government.
