Nuclear power push: NTPC in talks with Russia and France for massive reactor projects

| @indiablooms | Jan 02, 2026, at 02:10 pm

India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), the country’s largest power producer, has signed non-disclosure agreements with Russia’s Rosatom and France’s EDF to explore potential collaboration on deploying large pressurised water reactor (PWR) nuclear power projects in India, The Economic Times reported.

The proposed engagements would span the full lifecycle of nuclear projects — from concept development and design to construction and commissioning — with a strong emphasis on indigenisation, people familiar with the matter told the newspaper.

The agreements will allow NTPC to study and evaluate the technical specifications of the nuclear technologies it may seek to deploy, one of the sources said.

“Access to detailed technical specifications will help finalise tender requirements, enabling all major global players to qualify,” the person added.

What is NTPC?

According to its official website, NTPC Limited is India’s largest integrated power utility and has been a key driver of the country’s energy growth for more than five decades.

Established in 1975 as a thermal power producer, NTPC has since transformed into a diversified energy major with operations spanning the entire power value chain — including conventional and renewable generation, coal mining, power trading, e-mobility and green hydrogen.

With an installed capacity of around 85 gigawatts, NTPC supplies electricity to every fourth household in India while supporting the nation’s transition towards cleaner energy.

The company has set a target of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and is investing in emerging technologies such as nuclear power, battery energy storage systems, carbon capture and green chemicals.
