
Nitin Gadkari announces Rs 55,000 cr infra projects for Assam, including underwater tunnel
Guwahati: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has unveiled a series of major infrastructure projects worth Rs 55,000 crore for Assam.
Among these, the government will construct a 12-km underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh, with an estimated cost of Rs 15,000 crore.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the tunnel has been completed, and the Ministry of Defence has granted clearance for the project.
Speaking via a special video message during the Advantage Assam summit, Gadkari outlined the key projects aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region.
These include:
- Guwahati Ring Road Project worth Rs 5,800 crore
- Rs 25,000 crore four-lane road from Guwahati to Panchgram via Barapani, which will significantly cut travel time between the two cities to approximately five hours and become the region’s first express highway
- Kaziranga Elevated Corridor at a cost of Rs 6,000 crore
- A new Rs 3,225 crore road to enhance connectivity between Jagiroad and Bhutan via Bhairabkunda
- Kamakhya Ropeway Project to improve access to the renowned pilgrimage site

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the state is making Rs 25,000 crore in capital investments annually and aims to surpass that figure this year.
He added that the state government is increasing capital investments by 10% each year.
