L&T bags ‘significant’ contract to construct Uzbekistan’s first AI-enabled data centre

L&T described the contract as a “significant” order, a classification indicating a project valued between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore.

The company will oversee the engineering, procurement, and construction of the state-of-the-art facility, which will incorporate advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to support next-generation AI applications. 

The data centre is designed to optimize energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact, the release stated.

Additionally, the facility will feature advanced security measures, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to safeguard sensitive data, L&T noted.

Commenting on this, M V Satish, Member of Executive Committee & Advisor to the CMD, L&T, said: “It is indeed a matter of great pride that L&T Buildings & Factories vertical will be executing this AI-enabled and sustainable data centre in Tashkent. This underscores the expertise of L&T in executing complex and unique projects across the globe.”

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has approved a comprehensive strategy to fast-track artificial intelligence (AI) development in Uzbekistan, aiming to position the country as a leader in AI innovation. 

Signed on October 14, 2024, under Presidential Resolution PP No. 358, the strategy will guide Uzbekistan’s AI transformation through 2030.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the plan sets ambitious targets, including growing the AI-driven software and services market to $1.5 billion by 2030.

 Additionally, 10% of government services will be delivered through a national AI-powered platform, enhancing efficiency and accessibility.

 The government also plans to establish 10 scientific laboratories dedicated to AI research and deploy high-performance computing servers to support cutting-edge innovations.

Uzbekistan is striving to secure a spot among the top 50 countries in the Government AI Readiness Index by 2030.

To bolster AI research, a big data repository will be developed by September 2025, ensuring compliance with strict information security standards. 
By May 2026, advanced computing infrastructure will be introduced to process critical data for AI applications.

The Ministry of Digital Development will lead AI implementation efforts, working alongside the newly established Center for the Development of AI and the Digital Economy. 

This center will oversee AI system deployment and support start-ups by providing essential infrastructure and funding. 

To further facilitate AI growth, the Reconstruction and Development Fund has allocated $50 million as a five-year, interest-free loan to support AI-related initiatives.

AI to Transform Key Sectors

AI applications will be integrated across multiple sectors to enhance efficiency and innovation:

Banking: AI will improve fraud detection, solvency assessments, and market forecasting. The Central Bank has been directed to adopt AI-driven risk management solutions.

Tax & Customs: AI will help combat the shadow economy and detect suspicious customs activities.

Healthcare: AI will support medical diagnostics, treatment planning, and medical image analysis to improve patient outcomes.

Agriculture: AI will assist in crop yield forecasting, livestock monitoring, and optimizing poultry and fish production.

Energy: AI will play a role in energy resource management, promoting renewable energy, and enhancing power generation and distribution.

Uzbekistan’s AI roadmap reflects a strategic push to modernize key industries, attract investment, and drive economic growth, marking a major step toward becoming a global AI hub.
