India's coal production rose 7.51% year-on-year in July 2026, reflecting steady growth in the sector, according to government data released on Sunday.

The country's overall coal production reached 69.75 million tonnes (MT) (provisional) during July 2026, up from 64.88 MT in the corresponding month last year.

Coal dispatch also recorded strong growth during the month, rising 17.34% year-on-year to 86.33 MT (provisional), compared with 73.57 MT in July 2025.

The Ministry of Coal said the increase in production and dispatch highlights its sustained efforts to ensure a consistent coal supply and maintain operational stability across the sector.

Cumulative coal production during the first four months of FY 2026-27 stood at 302.24 MT (provisional), while cumulative coal dispatch reached 354.70 MT (provisional), registering a 5.87% increase over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Coal India Limited (CIL) contributed 50.35 MT (provisional) to the country's total coal production in July, registering an 8.42% year-on-year increase.

The state-run miner dispatched 63.67 MT (provisional) of coal during the month, up 17.43% from July 2025. CIL's cumulative coal dispatch during the April-July period of FY 2026-27 also grew 6.81% compared with the same period last year.

The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to achieving sustainable growth, improving domestic coal availability, and reducing dependence on imports.

With production and dispatch maintaining strong momentum, the coal sector continues to play a key role in supporting India's energy security and economic growth, the ministry said.
