Indian Market: Sensex tanks 567.98 points

Mumbai: Extending losses for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, the BSE Sensex dropped 567.98 points to close at 55,107.34 as selling was seen in realty, capital goods and consumer durable stocks.

The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too fell 153.20 points at 16,416.35.

The Sensex slumped 302 points at 55,373 in opening trade. During the day, it tanked 793 points at 54,882.41, the day's low, before closing at 55,107.34 as compared to its last close.

The Sensex registered the day's high and low at 55,387.77 and 54,882.41 points respectively.

The Nifty recorded the day's high and low at 16,487.25 and 16,347.10 respectively.

Sectoral indices like consumer durable, realty, capital goods, IT and FMCG kept the market under pressure.

In scrips, Titan was a major loser, down by 4.47 per cent to Rs 2,101.20 followed by Reddy's Lab by 3.87 per cent to Rs 4,142.15, L&T by 3 per cent to Rs 1,589.40, Hind Unilever by 2.98 per cent to Rs 2,211.50 and Asian Paints by 2.61 per cent to Rs 2,745.15.

The gainers were NTPC by 1.35 per cent to Rs 157.25, Maruti Suzuki by 1.30 per cent to Rs 7,811.25, M&M by 0.50 per cent to Rs 1,041.60 and Bharti Airtel by 0.37 per cent to Rs 685.90.

The Mid Cap declined by 0.77 per cent and Small Cap by 0.67 per cent.

In 30 scrips, 5 advanced while 25 slipped.

The Asian Market was seen weak on Tuesday as Australia fell by 1.54 per cent and Hong Kong and Taiwan by 0.56 per cent each.
