Assam gets Rs 1,00,000 crore investment proposals in Global Investors’ Summit

Guwahati, Feb 4 (IBNS): Assam gets Rs 1,00,000 crore investment proposals from over 175 domestic and international companies in various sectors including petroleum, tourism, health, telecom, agriculture, transport.

In the first ever investment promotion and facilitation initiative by the Assam government- ‘Advantage Assam – Global Investors’ Summit, 2018’- has attracted the investors from both domestic and international arena and they committed to invest around Rs 1,00,000 crore in the North Eastern Indian state and signed over 200 Memorandum of understanding (MoUs).

The 2-day event witnessed the luminaries of Indian business fraternity descending on the most talked about investment summit in the largest economy of North-Eastern India.

Assam saw a mammoth 200 MoUs, amounting to Rs 1,00,000 crore, signed in the mega business event held at Sarsajai, Guwahati.

Among the 175 companies, who signed MoUs with the Assam government in the event, Oil India Limited (OIL) will be investing Rs 10,000 crore, Indo-UK Institute of Health will be investing Rs 2,700 crore, Century Ply has shared plans of investing Rs 2,100 crore, Spicejet outlined plans of Rs 1,250 crore worth of investment for Assam through sea planes boosting the tourism sector besides connecting Lakhimpur and Jorhat under the Udaan Scheme.

Infinity Group will be investing Rs 1,000 crore in an IT Park and Real Estate in Guwahati.

Medanta Group shared their proposal of Rs 500 crore investment in the Healthcare sector.

Essel Infra group will be investing in Road Infra, Power and Water Resource, Dalmia Bharat Cement announced an investment attuned to Rs 1,100 crore.

Tourism sector, which is one of the key focus areas of the Assam government, saw an investment proposal in concurrence of around Rs 736 crore.

Infrastructure sector, which is a prime determinant of progress, saw a total investment proposal worth Rs 2,347 crore.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s thrust on the Act East Policy, Assam is swiftly becoming the most advantageous destination for all businesses aiming to connect with the ASEAN and BBIN nations.

PM Modi had inaugurated the summit on Saturday and said Northeast is at heart of India's 'Act East Policy' and Assam is India’s expressway to ASEAN.

Over 4500 delegates from different parts of the country and nations including Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Cambodia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Netherlands, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, UK, USA and Vietnam had participated in the event.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said in the closing ceremony of the event that Advantage Assam is an initiative for the younger generation of the state.

“Today is a special day for us and today’s success is a reflection of the hard work put in by the team and all our officials for the last one and a half years. The main ambition of the event, held with the help of our Prime Minister Naredra Modi, is to provide the youngsters of the state with a better tomorrow by taking initiatives today and providing platforms for youth to enhance their skills. I thank everyone for their encouragement and support, and helping us make this event a grand success. We have many miles to go, and we look forward to your continued support in implementing all these initiatives which will not only benefit Assam but the northeastern region as a whole,” Sonowal said.

In the summit Foreign delegates and ministers who were Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lyonpo Damcho Dorji, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bhutan, Amir Hossain Amu, Minister of Industries, Bangladesh, Lyonpo Damcho Dorji, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bhutan, Lyonpo Lekey Dorji, Minister of Economic Affairs, Bhutan, Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism Cambodia, Ounethoang Khaophanh, Vice Minister of Information Culture and Tourism, Government of Laos, Dr. Than Myint, Minister of Commerce Myanmar, Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam, Union ministers including Suresh Prabhu, Union Minister for Commerce and Industries, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Information Technology, Law and Justice, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Pema Khandu, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Chandra Mohan Patowary, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Assam and Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister Finance, Assam, Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for the Ministry of Home.

The summit focussed on sectors such as IT & ITeS, Handloom, Textiles and Handicrafts, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Tourism, Civil Aviation, River Transport and Port Townships, Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices and a special session on the opportunities in Bamboo.
