New Delhi/IBNS: The Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have released 78.98  lakh LPG connections till November 28 under Ujjwala 2.0 launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August this year, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas said Thursday.

Under Ujjwala 2.0 the government aims to release one crore deposit-free Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections throughout the country, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameswar Teli informed the Lok Sabha today in a written reply to a question.

This is in addition to the eight-crore LPG connections released under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana PMUY, he said.

West Bengal got the highest number of  LPG connections (17,90,848) followed by Uttar Pradesh (13,14,059) and Bihar (13,09,047), according to the ministry.

This move marked a near fulfillment of the FY22 Budget pledge of providing one crore LPG connections to the poor.

Under Ujjwala 2.0, the beneficiaries are given deposit free LPG connection along with free first refill and stove, facility to apply online for new PMUY connection and special provision for migrant families to avail new connection using self declaration as proof of address and family declaration.

To boost consumption of LPG and reduce diversion and delay in supplies, the centre has already allowed deferment of loan recovery from subsidy amount for PMUY beneficiaries, swap option from 14.2 kg to 5 kg to reduce upfront cash outgo, option of five Kg Double Bottle Connection, conducting Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayat to promote usage of LPG in a sustained manner.

The other boosters include mass awareness camps, up to three free refills to PMUY beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Package from April to December 2020, Aadhaar based deduplication, Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG subsidy, and opening of new distributorships.
